This might be the best description I have ever read about depression.

The difference between normal sadness and depression is that depression is unyielding. So, to use the analogy of feeling cold, normal sadness is like normal coldness. There are ways of getting warm. You can turn on a heater, put on more clothes, have a hot shower, and so on. But with depression, you can’t do anything about the cold.
